The arrival of induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) has made such personalized human disease modelling possible. However, cell culture is usually done using artificial environments that are very different from the natural microenvironment of cells in the body. Each cell in our body is exposed to a microenvironment with organ-specific physical and chemical properties that maintain properly differentiated cell states. Changes in the biomechanical properties of the microenvironment contribute to diseases such as cancer and fibrosis. In the collaborative “Convergence in a dish” project of TU Delft, ErasmusMC and Erasmus University, we aim to build a “village in a dish” cell culture platform (iCELL) where iPSCs from many individuals are co-cultured under controlled environmental conditions. Your role will be to develop in vitro cell culture models that capture the complex environment cells encounter in living tissues while being amenable to high throughput analysis. Earlier work has shown that the geometry, stiffness and composition of the extracellular matrix all affect cell behavior. You will combine these three factors into a screening array to match the optimal natural environment of cells using surface micropatterning, topographical patterning, and extracellular matrix hydrogels with tunable viscoelastic properties. Using multicolour time-lapse microscopy, you will perform high throughput phenotyping of the cells’ differentiation state, cytoskeletal organization, mechano-signaling pathways, cell metabolism and DNA damage in response to different substrates. Proof of concept will be tested for fibrosis. The research environment: We offer an inspiring, supportive and collegial environment. The Koenderink lab is an experimental biophysics lab studying the mechanobiology of cells and tissues. Job details The Spoofax team at TU Delft is pursuing a broad research program to develop a language workbench that supports high-level declarative language definition, the generation of programming environments (including editors, parsers, type checkers, and interpreters/compilers) from language definitions, and the (automated) verification of properties of language definitions and their implementations. One line of research in this program is concerned with the formalization of the name binding rules in programming languages. To that end, the group has developed a theory of name resolution based on scope graphs, and applied it in the design and implementation of a meta-language for static semantics. In dynamic semantics, scope graphs provide a uniform model for memory at runtime and serve as the basis for intrinsically-typed definitional interpreters, enabling the automatic verification of type soundness. We are seeking two PhD Students to join the Spoofax team to (1) extend the theory and application of scope graphs to the specification of programmable software restructurings, (2) develop analogs to scope graphs for capturing and transforming control flow, (3) develop a software restructuring framework for the C++ programming language based on this framework, and (4) validate the restructuring infrastructure through restructuring production C++ code at Philips Healthcare. Are you interested in asking fundamental questions in the area of emerging quantum states driven by proximity effect? We have openings for 2 PhD positions at Dr. Semonti Bhattacharyya’s group in Leiden Institute of Physics (LION). Exfoliation of graphene, followed by other layered materials have ushered in a new era of experimental physics, where designer new hybrid materials can be created by pick-and-drop van der Waals assembly of 2D materials with completely different properties. Recently, it has been discovered that properties of such heterostructures can be tuned by introducing a twist angle between two van der Waals materials. Van der Waals stacking is a unique route to create defect-free, smooth interface between to materials with completely different properties. Hence, these type of assemblies are ideal fertile ground to study mechanisms of proximity effect and interaction different quantum phases without the presence of significant amount of disorder. However, understanding and harnessing of such proximity effects and interaction are at a nascent stage. The PhD research topic involves (i) experimental detection and (ii) manipulation of new emergent quantum phases in such hybrid heterostructures as a function of twist angle and pressure. We start reviewing incoming applications immediately and until the position is filled. 2 PhD Positions // Quantum transport in van der Waals heterostructures Hydrogen is becoming one of the key energy carriers for the future to deal with the challenge of climate change and achieve the goals of the Paris Agreement, also because it can help to compensate for the intermittency of renewable energy resources, while it can be sustainably produced from e.g. solar and wind power through the electrolysis of water. Large-scale usage of H2, however, will necessitate its storage at massive scales. As part of the Sustainable Hydrogen Integrated Propulsion Drives (SH2IPDRIVE) consortium, the two PhD students working at the University of Amsterdam (UvA) will conduct research into various types of experimental hydrogen carriers in collaboration with a number of SME companies. This creates hydrogen storage solutions with a much greater volumetric energy density and potentially fewer safety risks than by using hydrogen at high pressure or low temperature. The prospects for hydrogen carriers are promising, but the technology is far from mature; the activities in this work package must therefore also be regarded as highly innovative in an international context.
